All members of the BMFC are volunteers.

Rod Flavell has been a Committee member of BMFC since 2012 and is currently serving as our President. He firmly believes that Australia has a moral obligation to support and build the capacity of developing nations like Timor-Leste. With a background in health and community services, Rod has played a crucial role in delivering BMFC's oral health programs that offer dental equipment and supplies in Maubisse. He has closely collaborated with St. John of God International Health at the Maubisse Hospital to address the community's high-priority health needs. Rod is committed to supporting the people of Timor-Leste and continuing the excellent work that has been carried out since the Committee's inception in 2006.
Milton Long is our Vice President and Scholarship Program Coordinator. He has been with the Committee for five years and brings extensive experience from his long career in education, and has a Master's degree in education. Milton has overseen the successful expansion of our Scholarship Program and guided its recent independent evaluation. He has visited Maubisse twice and is dedicated to developing future vocational projects there.
Deborah Blake is our Treasurer and longest-serving member, joining us at our inception in 2006 in her role with the City of Greater Bendigo. She has also served as Secretary and Deputy Chair, oversees finances for the Days for Girls program and coordinates our e-newsletter. Deborah trained as a teacher and recently retired from a long career as a finance administrator with Bendigo Venues & Events. When she joined in 2006, she viewed it as a meaningful way to support our newly independent neighbour through friendship and cultural understanding. Deborah has since travelled to Maubisse six times, is passionate about building on our previous work, and is proud of our consultative relationship with the Maubisse community.
Dionne Lynch, our Secretary, brings a unique perspective to our Committee. Her Master's degree in business and recent foray into animal health reflect her commitment to learning and growth. Dionne joined our team 18 months ago and is motivated to foster connections with other Committees. She cherishes the Committee's friendly camaraderie and deep commitment.
Jennifer Feiss is our Coordinator of the Days for Girls program in Maubisse and has been a member of the Committee since 2011. Her visual arts and social work expertise has been crucial in establishing and maintaining our art and sewing programs in Maubisse. Jennifer has visited Maubisse nine times, providing residents with much sought-after art and sewing training. Her dedication to the community and pride in the Committee's resilience and ability to shift priorities during the COVID pandemic highlights the strength of our partnership.
Dr Jen Alden joined us in 2016 as a Councillor for the City of Greater Bendigo and has been both Mayor and Deputy Mayor throughout her tenure with us. Her Doctorate in Public Health, focus on food policy, and previous roles with Women's Health Loddon Malee and Cultivating Community demonstrate her commitment to addressing malnutrition in Timor-Leste and promoting gender equity. Dr. Alden's emphasis on a flexible attitude during challenging times and her dedication to improving food security and health in Timor-Leste inspire confidence in our Committee's ability to tackle complex issues.
John Williams joined our Committee in 2019 and serves as our Fundraising Officer. He taught as a primary teacher from 1969 to 2012 across various regions in Victoria, including a period of teaching deaf children. John is a life member of Apex and has a longstanding dedication to community service, having also volunteered with Bendigo Tourism and assisting with aid collections for Timor-Leste. Inspired by his connection with Kirsty Sword Gusmao's parents, who were his own childhood teachers, John feels a strong bond with the Maubisse community. He is passionate about our mission and is excited about our future initiatives to support Maubisse.
Tony Plant Tony Plant has been with the Committee since 2021. As our logistics manager and Rotary Club liaison, he oversees the transport of donated goods from Bendigo to Maubisse. He fosters positive relations between the Committee and five local Rotary clubs. Tony is a former teacher and successful catering business owner. His travel to Maubisse in 2016 as part of a teacher training project sparked his commitment to continue Rotary support for Maubisse projects. Tony returned to Maubisse in 2023 and is dedicated to securing ongoing funding to ensure the continuing development of our projects. His envisions a study tour to Timor-Leste, where Rotary members and friends can learn about our projects firsthand.
Mark Feiss joined the Committee in 2012 after his first visit to Timor-Leste. In 2015, he took on the role of Treasurer, a position he held until mid-2018. Mark returned to the Committee in 2023, and he has put his background in building management to work for us, managing the practical aspects of our projects, including travel documentation, risk management, and volunteer responsibilities. Mark's frequent visits to Timor-Leste, the most recent 2023, have allowed him to witness significant improvements in Maubisse. He is committed to enhancing health and community well-being and looks forward to seeing growth in jobs and tourism in Maubisse and the surrounding areas.
Natasha Joyce is a historian and researcher with almost thirty years of experience in community organising in Melbourne and Bendigo. She joined the Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee in 2022 to assist with communications and publicity and is keen to promote the strong bonds between the Bendigo and Maubisse communities. Natasha was active in the Melbourne community's response to Timorese independence. She visited Timor-Leste in 2005 with the aid agency APHEDA-Union Aid Abroad, which solidified her ongoing commitment to community-led development.
Libby Hughes is our newest Committee member and brings a wealth of experience from her 17 years at Rotary. As the Coordinator of Rotary's Timor-Leste Knitting Project, she oversees the production and delivery of knitted items for infants and children in Timor-Leste made by volunteers from Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. A retired pharmacist, Libby joined our Committee driven by a deep passion for community projects. She appreciates the dedication and care our committee members show for Maubisse and is keen to contribute her expertise to our projects.
